AUSZUG AUS DEN LINER-NOTES

AMERICANA-UK (UK), 2015/04/13: DAD HORSE EXPERIENCE "BEST OF - SEINE SCHONSTEN MELODIEN" - The Theatre of the Gutter

Producing a best of compilation spanning the years 2008 to 2014 on limited edition vinyl and even more limited edition mint green vinyl sounds an odd model but the Dad Horse Experience, which is ostensibly the work of German lone banjo man, Dad Horse Ottn, seems strangely apt. The music is selected from a plethora of albums but is largely banjo tunes that swing between the tropes of Waitsian country plunks to Weimer Republic Cabaret camp. It attains quite a feat of being both high theatrical and guttural at the same time. Original tunes are mixed in with mostly American folk tradition but the Germanic elements of Dad Horses’s voice lend a welcome difference to the standard Bluegrass Country fair. Dad Horse has built a narrative in both his act and music which creates visions of a wanderer of dirt tracks and smoky cabarets, a cracked voice shaking a rusty tin can. It’s almost too compelling to ignore. (Matthew Boulter)

SLUG MAGAZINE (USA), 2015/04/02: REVIEW: BEST OF THE DAD HORSE EXPERIENCE.

Dad Horse Experience = Hank Williams + Earl Scruggs + Tom Waits

Dad Horse Ottn is a bit of a late bloomer. At the age of 39, Ottn learned to play the banjo and dedicated himself to being a traveling musician. A German playing traditional American gospel music mixed with stories and original songs, you can't help but listen. Preaching what he calls the "Keller Gospel" or Cellar Gospel, Ottn preaches his own brand of redemption. Confessional lyrics with a Sons of Perdition–meets–Johnny Cash tone, Ottn croons quirky Appalachian blues with a strong accent. I discovered Ottn's music a couple years ago and this "best of" is a nice highlight of his work. Songs like "Kingdom It Will Come" and "Ganz war ich nie" are my favorites on the album, poetic profanity of a sullied soul seeking absolution. I don't believe in god, but I believe in what Ottn has to say. (Alex Cragun)
